GENERAL INFO
From about 1979-1986, Bernhardt s Hibriten Flair Division explored furniture as an art form in a living, dining and bedroom collection for those who sought uncommon interior furnishings. Inspired by ancient art work, original scenes from nature are etched into tops and panels, then silk screened with five colors in this unique blend of timeless Oriental design in art as well as furniture. On Tuesday, May 26, 1981, a U.S. federal trademark registration was filed for SHIBUI. This trademark is owned by Bernhardt. The SHIBUI line of furniture was available for a few scarce years, 1981-1986.
Freely translated, Shibui means serenity and elegance. The term derives from Japanese paintings that captured the beauty and simplicity of nature in art as enchanting today as it was centuries ago.
To create a satisfactory medium for Shibui artistry, Hilbriten Flair Division conceived a style of classic Oriental line and proportion. The traditional horseshoe foot, stretcher treatments, carved fretwork, natural cane, leather wrapped joinery, authentic brass finish hardware all are interpreted with respect for ageless Eastern design, and regard for current interior needs. Forming a perfect art background is a clear, lustrous golden finish, the result of 28 separate steps. And, five additional color steps are required for Shibui nature scenes. While other Oriental decoration is usually applied during finishing, Shibui art is integrated with the wood itself. Four distinct landscape scenes are etched or cut into wood surfaces. Then, looking like brushstrokes, variegated shades of yellow are silk screened on stylized mums and butterflies, red on field poppies, brown and orange on singing birds, green on leaves and brown on branches. Some pieces in Shibui display all four scenes, some one or two and some feature rich olive ash burl, a warm compliment for the maple solids, veneers and wood products used in crafting this Hibriten Flair collection.
